I need to begin with acknowledging that this is an uncomfortable subject that will for most cause a violent reaction and subsequent judgment and condemnation. I am not condoning or endorsing any position. I fully believe in being accountable for your actions. I am simply asking questions.
I am also asking for a few minutes of your time to suspend what is easy and to explore what is cause instead of getting stuck in the effect.
Steven Crowder wrote a blog post recently in which his bottom line is “I still have a steadfast rule: touch a kid sexually and you deserve a bullet.”
And while this does ‘seem’ to solve the immediate problem, it doesn’t address the more systemic issues of cause and their effects.
He wrote this in response to another article on salon.com in which a self-described pedophile makes the case for the cause and possible solutions for this very disturbing issue.
The question I am posing is at what point does the ‘innocent victim’ then become the ‘guilty perpetrator’ society is then justified in shooting?
You may not care what triggers child abuse in all its forms, but I guarantee you that you do care what the effects of this are on you and society as a whole.
Also in headlines recently is the acknowledgment that US soldiers were aware of the Afghan practice of “bacha bazi, literally “boy play,” and American soldiers and Marines who were then instructed not to intervene by their superiors.
Is this where terrorism begins?
Terrorize a child, break him and then throw him away once he is used up asks the question, what will become of this innocent child?
What will this innocent child then do with his feelings of rage, anger, betrayal, helplessness and the memory of his inability to protect himself in the face of great danger and evil?
I must wonder, will he then grow up to be a man who terrorizes, attacks, tortures, rapes, mounts jihads, and beheads those deemed as infidels in an attempt to regain the control he lost so long ago?
Do we condone, endorse, or participate in making the monster and then blame him/her for our ills to justify our wars?
Typically women who are victimized turn their rage and anger on themselves and often become overweight, suicidal, depressed, anxious, or vicious in defending the rights of others.
Men most may turn those same feelings of rage and helplessness out on to others or become violent and self-destructive in their own lives.
The inability to protect themselves when they were young and weak (in their eyes) can create an inner drive to hurt or kill in the other what was hurt or killed within them.
Weakness in another creates rage within.
You may not want to face the cause and origins of why an adult would hurt an innocent child.
You will have to face the effects in their results as our collective relationships with spouse, doctor, soldier, coach, dictator, politician, religious leader, or global elite that is relentless in their need to crush and control the weakest in humanity.
And it is under this once victim and now perpetrator you will suffer the wrath of pain that began when they too were once an innocent child.
And I don’t think a bullet will solve the global problem.
I don’t pretend to have the answers. I do know that when we push what we don’t want to understand further underground and in the dark very little that is good grows there. I also know that the abuse and sexualization of any child is never okay, no matter what your culture or religion or personal philosophy may condone.
I am not asking questions to judge another or insight yet more hate and condemnation in an already over crowded field of public opinion.
It is easy to cast an opinion, write words of hate, attack the perpetrator, and kill what we fear and don’t understand.
But I ask you, will this solve the real problem? Is the path we need to take the one in which we begin elevating the discussion from our comfortable chairs and the protection of our computer screen and start asking the hard questions and then be able to listen for the answers?
Can we rest easy when the only answer we believe is to shoot the perpetrator and ignore the innocent child until he or she turns 18 so that they can be lined up for the firing squad? Is this an answer? Is this truly a global problem solved?
