I am sure there is a metaphor somewhere in that title and in my bread baking adventures - but it's been three years almost since I left my house and in that time I've never been able to bake bread in which the dough actually would rise.
Two days ago it finally did! I can't say the bread was any good because I didn't really care what I made, I just wanted to see if I tried to control more of the yeast issues it would work. It did. I am so happy because now I can make my own bread again!
As you can see, it's not very big! That is before I baked it. It was 100% wheat, so that is part of why it won't be very tall when it is done.
There are several reasons why I wanted to accomplish this goal - taste, cost, and mostly because something I am hoping to fully embrace soon is an attempt to no longer eat GMO.
Yikes, it is in EVERYTHING! But my own gut hasn't been feeling too well and all those pesticides and alien elements aren't making it any happier.
The other big issue on this is money and proximity. Food is limited where I am staying and the cost of driving to bigger stores keeps me here more often than not.
The cost of baking your own bread is usually less than a dollar a loaf vs. several dollars for really crummy bread if you buy it or a lot of dollars if you buy bakery bread.
But the biggest bonus is the taste - SO much better when you do it your self!
There it is - though it looked better than it tasted - but it is a start!!!
Understanding baking and what each ingredient does is part of this idea of understanding principles behind things you do. Most of us know how to buy, eat, and make sandwiches with bread. But, do you know why it rises and what each ingredient does?
Survival and freedom are both really dependent on this idea of understanding the principles behind things and not just how to use them.
It is something that has made all the difference for me in this journey of mine! It also makes me VERY annoying when anyone tries to fix my stuff as I hang over their shoulders and ask way too many questions...
Hopefully I'll be able to show you real bread soon, one of my goals is to figure out how to bake it in a sun oven this summer as heating up the inside of the trailer then is not a good idea...
Just a quick look at a tiny goal -but it is a happy one. Nothing is better than fresh baked bread!!!
If you haven't listened to the new podcasts, they are up and ready when you are!
Welcome to my Journey!
I'm inviting you to join me on my journey as I seek to find a new way of being in an old set of systems. It's hard, but worth it!
